The Planning

Where to start? Where to start? That is the question? My initial plan was to start from the top and work my way down, renting cars, RV’s, catching buses and flying to destinations but the more research I do, the more expensive it is proving to be on travel alone but I am determined to do it!

I had an idea in the back of my mind to buy a car but maintaining a car is just as expensive and so I dismissed this until I was reading an article by a young photographer who travelled South America for 8 months who hitch hiked with a girl from the Netherlands who bought a car and done that. At this point, I started researching into this and came a across a fascinating article with details of how a couple purchased a car in Chile and the process of how they done this. You can check out their website at https://bluemarblevagabonds.com/how-to-buy-a-car-in-chile-as-a-foreigner/. Hopefully this time next year (January 2024) I will be able to document my own experience with a successful outcome and drive into the sunset towards my first port of call, Torres del Paine (well that is the plan). A journey like this takes a lot of planning and research, where to go, how long to go for and what is in the area. As I have no time restraints, I am not in any hurry what so ever and so time is on my side as long as I am within 90 days. The useful thing about Tierra del Fuego (the most southern part of South America) is that it is in Argentina and so it means having to leave Chile for a short time and then return. I am then allowed another 90 days in Chile or do I just carry on up the East Coast of Argentina? Again, there are so many decisions.

Buy now or buy later?
